Education loans for studying in Germany
Many German public universities charge little or no tuition, so the loan question shifts to living expenses and the blocked account required for your visa.
What lenders will look for
- Admission letter from the university
- Blocked account funding for the visa
- Co-applicant income documents
- Collateral only where required for the amount
Funding your studies in Germany
Education costs
Plan for the blocked account amount, semester contribution, health insurance, accommodation and travel. Tuition may be minimal at public universities but private institutions charge full fees.
Secured vs unsecured
Because totals are often lower than in the US or UK, unsecured loans are frequently workable. Secured loans remain useful for private universities with full tuition.
Co-applicant
Usually required, with income assessed in the normal way.
Collateral
Applicable mainly for larger loans at private institutions.
Loan amount
Typically sized around the blocked account requirement, living costs and any tuition payable.
Repayment
Tenures up to around twelve years, beginning after the moratorium.
Moratorium
Commonly course duration plus six months.
Disbursement
Funds may be routed to the blocked account or the university depending on the lender's process.
Documents you'll need
- Admission letter and semester fee details
- Blocked account confirmation
- Passport and visa documents
- Academic transcripts and language certificates
- Co-applicant income and bank documents
