USA, UK, Canada or Germany: comparing the funding reality of each

Course length, living costs, proof-of-funds rules and post-study work all change what you should borrow. A destination-by-destination funding comparison.
Choosing a destination is usually an academic decision. It is also, quietly, the biggest financial decision in the process — course length alone can change your total borrowing by more than any interest rate negotiation ever will.
United States
Two-year master's programmes with high tuition and high living costs, offset by the deepest pool of assistantships and the strongest post-study earning potential in most fields. Funding needs are the largest of any destination, and unsecured loans are widely available for ranked programmes. Proof of funds for the visa typically leans on the I-20 and a sanction letter covering at least the first year. Borrow with a currency plan: if you intend to stay and work, a dollar loan removes exchange risk; if you intend to return, a rupee loan does.
United Kingdom
One-year taught master's programmes are the defining financial advantage — one year of tuition, one year of living cost, one year of foregone earnings. Total funding requirement is typically far below a comparable US degree. London costs substantially more than most other UK cities and the visa maintenance requirement reflects that. Funds must generally be held or evidenced according to specific rules, so check the maintenance requirement and the holding period before moving money around. Post-study work rights allow a graduate period to find employment.
Canada
Moderate tuition relative to the US and UK, with an established route that expects a specific up-front deposit arrangement for living expenses in certain streams, plus proof of first-year tuition. That structure means your loan timing matters as much as the amount: funds need to be in place earlier than families expect. Post-study work permits are generous relative to course length, and pathways to longer-term residence are comparatively clear. Lenders are comfortable with the destination, and both secured and unsecured options are common.
Germany and continental Europe
Public universities in Germany charge low or no tuition for most programmes, with a semester contribution instead. The dominant cost is living, and the visa route generally requires a blocked account holding a specified annual amount. That changes the loan structure entirely: you are financing living costs and a blocked deposit rather than tuition. Programmes are often taught in English at postgraduate level, but German improves both part-time work and job prospects materially. Ireland, the Netherlands and the Nordics each have their own tuition and proof-of-funds profiles worth checking individually.
Australia
Tuition and living costs sit between the UK and the US, with a strong post-study work regime and clear evidence requirements for funds. Two-year programmes are common, which raises total borrowing relative to the UK.
The five variables that actually decide your number
- 1Course length. One year versus two is the largest single lever on total borrowing.
- 2City, not country. Rent in a capital city can double your living-cost line.
- 3Proof-of-funds mechanics. Blocked accounts and deposits require money to exist at a specific time, which affects when you need sanction and disbursement, not just how much.
- 4Currency of earning after graduation. Repaying in the currency you earn removes exchange-rate risk from a ten-year commitment.
- 5Assistantship availability. Realistic in US research programmes, rarer in one-year taught master's.
How to compare like for like
Build the same five-line budget for each shortlisted destination — tuition, living, insurance, one-time costs, buffer — converted at a conservative exchange rate, then divide by the expected post-study monthly income in that country. The destination with the lowest ratio of total borrowing to expected earnings is usually the sounder financial choice, even when it is not the most prestigious option on the list.
Immigration and proof-of-funds rules change regularly. Always confirm current requirements with the official government source for your destination before finalising a plan, and talk to us early so the loan timeline lines up with the visa timeline rather than chasing it.
